And now for something completely different… My family and I recently went to visit my brother’s family in Maryland. We happened to go to their local supermarket which, it turns out, sold quite a variety of interesting and hard-to-find produce. Sour oranges, Thai eggplant, Jack fruit and…. durian! If you are not familiar with the name of this fruit, you might actually have seen it and not known what the heck it was. I personally, had seen them a number of times being sold down in Chinatown by the food stand vendors. They are large and melon-like with many spikes (they look ouch) and are sold usually in plastic meshes for easy carrying. read more »

golden flower cake 22 Golden Flower Cake Part 2!

I recently got to revisit the Golden Flower cake when a client requested the same cake for a 70th birthday celebration. I tweaked the design around a bit to include a third flower on the bottom tier. The client chose a neapolitan flavor combo of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry layers of cake. This cake’s design mode would also work well as a wedding cake.

black gold silver cake1 300x268 Simple Birthday Cake for a ManAlways a dilemma–the simply masculine birthday cake. I was told the color scheme was black, gold and silver. It is always a challenge to design a masculine cake when you have been stripped  of all possibility of 3D ideas or themes. No falling on the usually crutches of bows, flowers, etc. My next thought was to use fabric patterns. My client wanted simple so I couldn’t get all crazy either, however, I still wanted the design to standout as unique. I finally decided to let the “30″ stand out as my focal point, which worked. This was a really good exercise for design. Not the greatest photo, but here it is, folks! We have now done a simple masculine birthday cake.

I wanted to share a couple of baby shower cakes I recently got to create, because it branched into an area I rarely tread–human figures. I, personally, find the thought of cakes shaped into people or having edible human figures on cakes a little off-putting. I know it’s a crazy psychologically thing, but it’s still disconcerting for me nonetheless. read more »
